Towards the end of the 1950s, new high-speed motor units with speeds of 140-160 km/h were needed for the planned international long-distance transport (Trans Europ Express) in Western Europe. Here comes the VT 11.5 Trans Europ Express.

In 1957, delivery began of nine 131-metre-long basic units, each consisting of two 810 kW power cars at the head and tail of the train and five cars in between.
The red and ivory coloured fast units, with their unique 1st class dining and bar car, were absolute stars in the railway skies of the 1950s from the start, taking their passengers on business trips to destinations such as Amsterdam, Oostende, Zurich, Paris North and Antwerp.
In 1972, the four diesel vehicles were equipped with powerful gas turbines and three years later they achieved the German speed record for diesel vehicles - 217 km/h.
With the extension of the line's electrification and the switch of international long-distance traffic to the new E10 series locomotives, the trains, designated as the 601 series from 1968, changed their train power piece by piece and ran for domestic service until they were phased out in 1987.
There are currently 8 engine cars (including one 602) and 20 inset cars in various museums.
