The TU is the everlasting star of narrow gauge railways! Although the name can imply relation to the aerodynamic shape of an aeroplane, this is not the case.

The TU is the 705.9 series locomotive, originally labelled as T 47.0 and later TU 47.0, is a diesel locomotive designed for service at narrow gauge railways (760/750 mm). Currently, it’s the oldest locomotive series still serving in the Czech Republic.

The machine was produced by ČKD in 1954, as a replacement for steam engines on the narrow gauge railway of Czechoslovakia. The locomotives were exported also to Soviet Union (45 items), labelled as TU 3. In total, there were 21 TU 47.0 machines made and placed in different places of ČSSR. They served on the track Frydlant v Čechách-Heřmanice (750 mm), also in Jindřichův Hradec and in border areas near Třemešná and Osoblaha. And finally, in the Slovakian Tatras, between Ružomberok and Korytnica towns.

You can see and meet some of the locomotives still in full shape, mostly renovated and updated, in Jindřichův Hradec (JHMD) and also on Osoblaha railway.
